Sixty days ago, I sat down to write the first post in this series, and if I'm honest, I wasn't sure how much there was to say about perfume beyond "here's what smells nice and why." Two months and sixty posts later, I've written about oud and jasmine, about ozone and skin scents, about festivals across the country and spice souks halfway across the world — and it feels fitting to end where a huge number of people now actually begin their fragrance journey: scrolling.

From Counter Sniff-Tests to "Fragrance TikTok"
For most of perfumery's modern history, discovery happened in person — a department store counter, a knowledgeable salesperson, a stack of blotter strips. Social media broke that model entirely. "Perfume TikTok" and fragrance Instagram turned scent description into a genre of its own, with creators developing an entire shorthand vocabulary — "gourmand," "clean girl," "old money," "signature scent" — that helped people talk about smell, a notoriously hard sense to put into words, in a way that spread fast and traveled well on a visual, wordless platform.
The Rise of the Note Breakdown
One of the more genuinely useful things this shift produced is the popularization of "note breakdowns" — creators listing out top, heart, and base notes for a fragrance in an easy-to-digest format, something that used to live only in press releases or niche fragrance forums. This educated an entire generation of shoppers to ask better questions before buying: not just "does it smell nice," but "what's actually in it," which is a meaningfully more sophisticated way to shop than fragrance retail has traditionally encouraged.
Hype Cycles and the "Sold Out" Effect
Social media also introduced a new kind of pressure into fragrance buying: the viral hype cycle, where a single popular video can send a specific fragrance sold out worldwide within days. This has real upsides — genuinely well-made, previously under-the-radar fragrances get discovered by people who'd never have found them otherwise — but it's also created a chase mentality, where people buy based on what's trending rather than what actually suits their own chemistry and lifestyle. As a perfumer, I'd gently push back on this instinct: a fragrance that works brilliantly on a creator's skin and in their climate may behave completely differently on yours.
Why This Matters More in India Right Now
India's fragrance market has been especially reshaped by this shift, because social media collapsed the information gap that used to make imported, prestige fragrance feel mysterious and inaccessible. Shoppers now walk into a purchase — online or in person — with genuine knowledge of notes, longevity expectations, and comparisons to fragrances they've seen reviewed. That's raised the bar for every brand, including us, to be transparent about what's actually in the bottle rather than relying on packaging and price alone to do the convincing.

Where SCENTIENCE Fits in a Scroll-First World
We built this brand for exactly this more informed shopper — someone who wants real note information, honest pricing, and a fragrance that performs the way it's described, not just a pretty bottle for a fifteen-second video. Velvet Plum, with its distinctive plum, grapefruit, honey, and roasted hazelnut combination, is the kind of fragrance that genuinely benefits from a note breakdown — it's unusual enough that knowing what's in it changes how you experience wearing it. Precious, with its bright citrus and fruity floral character over woody musk, has become one of our most naturally shareable scents precisely because it photographs and describes as beautifully as it wears. Both are ₹799, built to hold up to the scrutiny that today's more educated fragrance shopper rightly brings to every purchase.
Closing Thought
Writing sixty of these has reminded me that people have never really wanted to just buy a bottle — they've wanted to understand what they're putting on their skin and why it matters to them. That's been the whole point of this project, screen or no screen, and it's the thing I hope stays true no matter what platform we're all discovering scent on next. Thank you for reading along.
