Paper has no temperature, no oil, no sweat, and no bacteria — and every one of those things gets a vote in what you actually smell once a fragrance leaves the bottle. Temperature Changes the Timeline

Skin runs warm — somewhere around 33 to 37°C at the surface — and that warmth accelerates evaporation. On a blotter at room temperature, top notes linger a little longer before handing off to the heart. On skin, that citrus or aldehyde opening burns off faster, and the warmer base notes arrive sooner than the pyramid diagram on the box would suggest. This is also why a fragrance can feel “sharper” for the first five minutes on you than it did in the store, then round out faster than you expected. It isn’t inconsistency. It’s thermodynamics.

If your own body temperature runs warm, you’ll likely notice stronger initial projection and a shorter overall arc. Run cooler, and the same fragrance unfolds more slowly and, in my experience, lasts longer in the base.

Sebum and pH Decide How Long It Stays

Skin isn’t inert the way paper is — it’s covered in a thin film of sebum, and how much of it you have changes everything about longevity. Oilier skin holds onto base notes like amber, musk, and woods considerably longer, because those heavier molecules bind to the oil rather than evaporating straight into the air. Drier skin has less to hold onto, so the same fragrance can feel like it vanishes within an hour. This is the actual explanation behind the most common complaint we hear — “it disappears on me” almost never means a fragrance is weak. It usually means the skin it’s on is dry.

Skin pH plays a smaller supporting role here too, subtly shifting how certain aromatic compounds read, though sebum level is the bigger factor by far.

Your Skin Microbiome Has a Say

This one gets exaggerated a lot online, so let’s be precise about it. Skin hosts a resident population of bacteria, and some of those bacteria do metabolise certain fragrance compounds, producing byproducts that can shift how a scent smells over the course of wear. It’s a real, documented effect — but the internet tends to inflate it into “your microbiome completely rewrites your perfume,” which overstates what the evidence actually supports. Treat it as one contributing variable among several, not the main event.

Diet, Medication, and Hormones

Diet, certain medications, and hormonal fluctuation are all commonly described as influencing how fragrance reads on an individual, generally through subtle changes to sebum production and skin surface chemistry. The effects here are real but modest, and vary enormously person to person — nobody can promise you that cutting out garlic will change your sillage.
